1,346 COVID cases confirmed in Alberta Wednesday, 522 were Omicron

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

1,346 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 345,080. Of those, 7,065 cases are active while 334,716 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 18 people tested positive.

522 of the new positive tests were for the Omicron variant, six of which came from the South Zone. Thus far, Omicron has been detected in 2,131 cases in the province and 25 in the region.

With 11,516 tests conducted over the past day, the positivity rate was 11.7 per cent.

Active infections shot up by 1,020 across the province but just by seven in the South Zone.

Since yesterday’s update, five Albertans died from COVID including two each in the Central and North Zones and one in the Calgary Zone. To date, 3,299 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 326 patients are currently hospitalized including 65 who have been admitted to intensive care.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 128,685 cases, 3,887 active
    • 113 in hospital, 19 in ICU
    • 858 deaths (one new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 106,854 cases, 2,087 active
    • 97 in hospital, 31 in ICU
    • 1,329 deaths
  • North Zone – 47,034 cases, 406 active
    • 39 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 408 deaths (two new)
  • Central Zone – 38,900 cases, 454 active
    • 61 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 414 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 23,566 cases, 223 active
    • 16 in hospital, two in ICU
    • 290 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the last day:

  • Lethbridge – 7,326 cases (five new), 88 active, 62 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 2,697 cases (five new), 49 active, eight deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 2,395 cases, 14 active, 22 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 2,227 cases, 25 active, 32 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 4,646 cases (eight new), 46 active, 78 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,108 cases, five active, 24 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 2,023 cases (one new), 23 active, 20 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,876 cases, nine active, 40 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,312 cases (one new), 10 active, 18 deaths
  • Cypress County – 878 cases (two new), 12 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 799 cases, four active, four deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 661 cases, three active, 11 deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 578 cases, two active, seven deaths
  • County of Newell – 529 cases, 13 active, eight deaths
