1,625 new COVID cases in Alberta but no new deaths

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Thursday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

***During a press conference Thursday, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said COVID-19 numbers for the province will not be updated again until Wednesday, December 29.***

1,625 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total throughout the pandemic to 346,705. Of those, 8,359 are active while 335,047 people have recovered.

With 11,871 tests conducted over the past day, the positivity rate was 13.7 per cent.

506 of the new cases were the Omicron variant, six of which came from the South Zone. So far, that variant has been detected in 2,637 cases in the province and 31 in the South Zone.

In the South Zone, 34 people tested positive with 15 in Medicine Hat and 11 in Lethbridge.

Active infections provincially rose by 1,294 and across the region by 18.

AHS did not report any COVID deaths in the province since our last update yesterday. To date, 3,299 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 318 patients are currently hospitalized including 64 who have been admitted to intensive care.

  • Calgary Zone – 129,611 cases, 4,665 active
    • 107 in hospital, 18 in ICU
    • 858 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 107,391 cases, 2,539 active
    • 94 in hospital, 31 in ICU
    • 1,329 deaths
  • North Zone – 47,085 cases, 424 active
    • 37 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 408 deaths
  • Central Zone – 38,955 cases, 460 active
    • 63 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 414 deaths
  • South Zone – 23,600 cases, 241 active
    • 17 in hospital, two in ICU
    • 290 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the last day:

  • Lethbridge – 7,337 cases (11 new), 94 active, 62 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 2,701 cases (four new), 52 active, eight deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 2,394 cases (four new), 17 active, 22 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 2,230 cases (three new), 25 active, 32 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 4,661 cases (15 new), 58 active, 78 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,109 cases (one new), six active, 24 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 2,024 cases (one new), 20 active, 20 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,876 cases, nine active, 40 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,312 cases, 10 active, 18 deaths
  • Cypress County – 878 cases, 10 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 800 cases (one new), five active, four deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 662 cases (one new), four active, 11 deaths
