COVID hospitalizations rising in Alberta, just not at same rate as cases

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Monday, covering statistics from the past four days.

In that time, 23,879 cases were confirmed, or approximately 5,969 per day. To date, Alberta has seen 412,829 COVID cases.

57,332 cases are active while 352,153 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 966 people tested positive in that time for a daily average of 241.

There were 431 new cases in Lethbridge (108/day) and 232 in Medicine Hat (58/day).

Active infections in Lethbridge have now entered four digits at 1,043, an increase of 343 since our last report on Thursday.

Since Thursday’s update, eight Albertans have died from COVID with five in the Calgary Zone, two in the Central Zone, and one in the South Zone. So far in the pandemic, 3,344 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The death in the South Zone was for a resident of West Lethbridge.

Provincially, 635 patients are currently hospitalized with 72 who have been admitted to intensive care. That marks an increase of 137 and eight respectively.

For hospitals in the South Zone, admissions have increased by seven including one additional person in ICU.

  • Calgary Zone – 162,063 cases, 27,837 active
    • 264 in hospital, 28 in ICU
    • 878 deaths (five new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 131,415 cases, 20,749 active
    • 197 in hospital, 27 in ICU
    • 1,338 deaths
  • North Zone – 49,719 cases, 2,357 active
    • 63 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 416 deaths
  • Central Zone – 42,493 cases, 3,204 active
    • 82 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 420 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 26,151 cases, 2,328 active
    • 29 in hospital, four in ICU
    • 292 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past four days:

  • Lethbridge – 8,489 cases (431 new), 1,043 active, 64 deaths (one new)
    • West Lethbridge – 3,194 cases (180 new), 430 active, nine deaths (one new)
    • North Lethbridge – 2,750 cases (141 new), 335 active, 22 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 2,544 cases (112 new), 284 active, 33 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 5,295 cases (232 new), 582 active, 78 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,208 cases (47 new), 94 active, 24 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 2,153 cases (40 new), 109 active, 20 deaths
  • Cardston County – 2,004 cases (63 new), 115 active, 40 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,373 cases (25 new), 59 active, 18 deaths
  • Cypress County – 941 cases (24 new), 55 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 851 cases (19 new), 49 active, four deaths
