LETHBRIDGE, AB – It’s Polar Plunge season!

For the 11th straight year, Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics Alberta hosts the polar plunge event, raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics athletes.

Like last year, the 2022 event is set to occur virtually. Participants can take a dip in an ice bath or bust out the backyard slip and slide, with many other ways to be involved.

In a release, organizers stated that safety remains a priority for all LETR events, so the decision was made to keep the event virtual as opposed to in-person due to COVID-19.

Graham Abela, LETR Executive Council Chair said, “this event is critical in helping get Special Olympics athletes back on the field and so we encourage participants to get involved, get creative and support a great cause.”

Plunge season will start on January 30 and wrap up March 12. Fundraising will remain open until March 20.

Abela added, “we want to thank the sponsors who continue to support us virtually and make a difference in the lives of Special Olympics athletes.”

Fundraisers earn incentives like dry bags, towels and hooded blankets, and can qualify for provincial awards if they reach top fundraising status.

To showcase participating communities, there will be Virtual Highlight Days this year, with each city having a mini opening ceremony on social media. Plungers living in the highlighted cities are asked to share their plunge videos online to help celebrate the highlight days. Lethbridge’s highlight day is February 5.

In 2021, 213 plungers took part in virtual dips and raised $116,000 in support of Special Olympics Alberta. To register for this year’s event, and to find more details on how to get involved are available here.
