Hurricanes lose 5-2 to visiting Rebels

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A high-scoring affair did not end in Lethbridge’s favour Friday night at the ENMAX Centre. The Hurricanes fell 5-2 to the visiting Red Deer Rebels.

FIRST PERIOD

Red Deer’s Ben King started the scoring at the 3:28 mark.

Carter Anderson received a minor penalty for interference at the 5:46 mark, putting Lethbridge on the power play. The ‘Canes were unable to capitalize.

At 8:59, Lethbridge’s Nolan Bentham received a minor for boarding. Teammate Justin Hall was called for hooking (minor) at 12:10.

Ben King put Red Deer up 2-0 with his second goal of the game at 12:45.

SECOND PERIOD

At the 2:07 mark of the second frame, Chase Pauls (Lethbridge) was called for tripping. Liam Keeler took advantage of the power play and put Red Deer up 3-0 at the 2:51 mark.

Hunter Mayo was called for cross checking at 7:44. Shortly after, at 8:11, Yegor Klavdiev of the ‘Canes was issued a minor penalty for tripping.

At 9:38, Alex Thacker scored his sixth of the season to trim Red Deer’s lead. Tristan Zandee scored at 10:46, giving Lethbridge their second goal of the game.

At 16:07, Lethbridge’s Joe Arntsen was given a penalty for tripping. Jackson van de Leest scored for Red Deer at 16:45 to give the Rebels a 4-2 lead going into the final frame.

THIRD PERIOD

5:19 into the third, Kalan Lind (Red Deer) was given a minor penalty for checking from behind, then at 9:35, Tyson Laventure of the ‘Canes served a penalty for too many men on the ice.

The final penalty of the game came at 11:46 when Red Deer’s Carter Anderson was called for tripping.

The Rebels scored one final goal with Dallon Melin recording his fourth of the season at 18:16 on Lethbridge’s empty net.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Rebels came away with a 5-2 win. A highlight for the ‘Canes? Brayden Edwards, traded to the team earlier this week, was named the third star of the game.

Red Deer’s goaltender Connor Ungar was the game’s second star, and his teammate Ben King was the Friday night matchup’s first star.

The Hurricanes travel to Swift Current to face the Broncos Saturday night, January 22. The Rebels are back in Red Deer Saturday night, hosting the Moose Jaw Warriors.
