AHS reports 22 COVID deaths in Alberta, including four in South Zone

Jan 26, 2022 | 3:52 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Wednesday, partly covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

3,341 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 481,182. Of those, 47,743 cases are active while 429,934 people have recovered.

With 9,000 tests conducted over the past day, the positivity rate was 37.1 per cent.

It should be noted that, on January 10, the province limited the number of people who can get a PCR test from AHS for COVID-19 to only those in high-risk settings. This likely means that the amount of people who have actually contracted COVID since then would be higher than what is being reported by the province.

In the South Zone, 272 people tested positive including 93 in Lethbridge and 60 in Medicine Hat.

Active infections for the region went down by 17

Since yesterday’s update, 22 Albertans died from COVID with nine in the Edmonton Zone, eight in the Calgary Zone, four in the South Zone, and one in the Central Zone. To date, 3,505 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone were for residents of South Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Brooks, and Lethbridge County.

Provincially, 1,418 patients are currently hospitalized including 109 who have been admitted to intensive care. This marks an increase of 41 for hospitalizations and a decrease of two for ICU since our last report.
