Suspect injured in officer-involved shooting in Picture Butte, ASIRT investigating

PICTURE BUTTE, AB – More details have been released on what RCMP had previously described as a “policing incident” in Picture Butte.

At approximately 5:00 pm on Thursday, Feb. 24, Coaldale RCMP was called to a home in Picture Butte on 528 Highway Ave.

Upon their arrival, officers were confronted by an individual holding a weapon. A confrontation occurred, during which, an officer “discharged their service weapon.”

The suspect retreated into the house.

Several hours later, the suspect exited the residence and surrendered to police without incident.

“It was determined that the suspect had sustained injuries,” reads a media release from Coaldale RCMP. “Emergency Medical Services attended and the male was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No RCMP officers sustained any injuries.”

Coaldale RCMP contained the area.

Alberta RCMP says, as soon as they became aware of the incident, they contacted the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated their internal review process.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is attending the scene to investigate the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting. This will include what took place during the incident, RCMP training, policies, police response, and the duty status of the members involved.

RCMP will not be providing any further comments during the investigation.

No mention was made as to whether anyone is facing any charges.
