Time change this Sunday provides opportunity to check smoke alarms

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Daylight saving time begins this weekend.

On Sunday, March 13 at 2:00 a.m., clocks will be moved forward by one hour. The City of Lethbridge’s Fire & Emergency Services is encouraging residents to also check their smoke detectors.

The department notes that the expiry date on a smoke detector should be reviewed every year. A City of Lethbridge release stated that, “putting in fresh batteries is an important step to ensure smoke detectors are working properly.”

“If your smoke detector is more than 10-years-old, it will need to be replaced.”

In the past year, fire crews say they have noticed an increase in alarm calls due to cooking. However, in the majority of cases, no one was seriously injured, “and this can be attributed to smoke alarms warning people to leave their homes.”

“Spend a few minutes to make sure everyone in your home recognizes the sound of the smoke alarm and knows what to do in case of a fire.”

More information on smoke alarms is available from the Canada Safety Council. Residents are also encouraged to check the batteries and working condition of their carbon monoxide detectors.
