Melissa Whitegrass sentenced following death of spouse in 2020

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge woman will spend another two years in custody.

Melissa Whitegrass, 38, of Lethbridge, was sentenced on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, on a charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

It was supposed to be the beginning of a three-day preliminary inquiry in Lethbridge Provincial Court.

On June 1, 2020, LPS and EMS were called to an alley on the 900 block of 13 Street South on a report of a collision between a yellow Dodge Ram truck and a male pedestrian.

The victim is said to have been Whitegrass’ spouse.

Initially, she was also charged with first-degree murder and assault with a weapon, but those were withdrawn at the Mar. 9 hearing.

Whitegrass was sentenced to 1,290 days in custody or approximately 3.5 years. With credit for time already served, she will remain in prison for two years and two days.

In addition, her driver’s license has been suspended for a period of five years.
