LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was supposed to be the start of a five-day trial for a Lethbridge man charged in the death of a child.

In Lethbridge Provincial Court on Monday, March 28, 2022, Justin Dean spoke on behalf of Neil Martin Skjodt’s defense lawyer Greg White, who did not appear in the courtroom in person.

The court was informed that, due to a “very personal matter,” White would not be able to “accurately and confidently” assist Skjodt in his trial.

A brief adjournment occurred so Dean could speak with White again and seek instructions on how to proceed.

White provided Dean with a letter explaining the reasons why he would not be able to partake in the trial this week, the specifics of which were not read out loud.

Justice Robert Hironaka said that, in his 49 years in the law profession, the last 30 of which have been as a judge, situations like this are very rare.

At the same time, he said that he understands the situation White is in and that he would want to ensure Skjodt faces a fair trial.

Skjodt, 54, faces one count of careless driving.

LPS reports that, on April 13, 2020, a collision occurred in which a vehicle travelling southbound on Aquitania Boulevard West made a right-hand turn into the westbound lanes of Whoop-Up Drive.

Two boys, who were crossing the street with their father, were struck by the vehicle.

A 10-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries that resulted in his death, while a nine-year-old boy suffered minor injuries.

Several family members were in attendance in court. Justice Hironaka apologized to them for the delay in trial proceedings.

Crown Prosecutor Sheena Campbell said the next time that five full trial dates would be available would likely be in December 2022. Trial dates are expected to be set on Tuesday, March 29.
