Street sweeping to start in Lethbridge next week

Apr 4, 2022 | 10:36 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The annual street sweeping program in Lethbridge is set to start next week.

Each spring, crews clean thousands of tonnes of sand, dirt and other debris from roughly 580 kilometres of roads in Lethbridge. This helps to prevent that material from being washed into the Oldman River via the city’s storm sewer system. The work also helps to reduce dust in neighborhoods and improves the safety of streets for cycling, walking and driving. Street sweeping is scheduled so that it does not interfere with garbage pickup.

If the weather permits, signs advising residents of the street sweeping will be placed in neighborhoods starting on April 11, with sweeping beginning on April 12.

This year, crews will start with missed areas from 2021, including Tudor Estates, Scenic Heights, Chinook Heights and Park Royal. Sweepers will then head to the north side, beginning in Hardieville, followed by the remainder of the south side and then on to the west wide. The area of the city where sweeping starts rotates every year.

Temporary ‘No Parking’ signs will be posted in specific neighborhoods the day before sweepers arrive. There will be no door hanger reminders or windshield wiper notices this year.

Residents are asked to move their vehicle before 7:30 a.m. on street sweeping days. Parking tickets of $25 may be issued to vehicles that are not moved from the street.

The sand and debris that gets picked up by sweepers is stored and cleaned. The reconditioned sand is reused by mixing it into new sand for the following year’s sanding operation. Residual waste material is disposed of in the landfill.

NIGHT SWEEPING

The City of Lethbridge noted that night sweeping will start on April 10, weather permitting, for arterial roads and roads in the industrial area.

Night sweeping will be going for about six to eight weeks from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. from Sundays through Thursdays, in order to avoid impeding traffic during busier daytime hours.

More information on the street sweeping program is available through the City’s website.

Residents are also being encouraged to download the new Lethbridge Loop mobile app to receive street sweeping notifications for their neighborhood.
