LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is recognizing the National Day of Mourning.

Each year on April 28, people across the country and the world take time to remember workers who have been killed, injured or disabled on the job.

Unfortunately, since 2019, 925 Albertans have been lost to workplace injury or illness.

The City of Lethbridge and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 70 will host a Day of Mourning wreath laying ceremony for the first time since 2019 on Thursday, April 28 at 12:00 p.m.

Officials note it will offer residents a chance to honour coworkers, friends and family who have lost their lives to workplace injury or illness. The City said it’s also a way “to collectively renew our commitment to fostering safer workplaces in our city.”

Flags at City Hall are lowered to half-mast in recognition of the day.

The wreath laying ceremony is at 12:00 p.m. at the CUPE 70 Workers Memorial Site at Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge, located at 1210 Scenic Drive South. All are welcome to attend.

The National Day of Mourning was officially recognized by the Government of Canada in 1991, eight years after the day of remembrance was launched by the Canadian Labour Congress.

Since then, the Day of Mourning has spread to about 80 countries around the world.
