LETHBRIDGE, AB — Construction crews began painting new permanent crosswalks as part of the final steps in completing the 3rd Avenue South reconstruction project.

The new crosswalks will feature the LGBTQ+ flag on the west side of the intersection at 3rd Avenue and 7th Street South, and the Transgender flag on the east side.

Both crosswalks will be permanent additions thanks to the financial support of the Lethbridge Pride Fest Society. The permanent paint is expected to withstand daily wear and tear, and can last up to 10 years.

Urban Revitalization Manger for the City of Lethbridge, Andrew Malcolm, says he’s excited to have this addition to downtown.

“The Lethbridge Pride Fest Society has been instrumental in this implementation and we are excited for these crosswalks to be a part of the streetscaping project on 3 Avenue,” says Malcolm. “The ongoing revitalization efforts are rooted in making Downtown Lethbridge a vibrant space for everyone in our community.”

The City of Lethbridge first painted temporary crosswalks downtown before the 2016 Lethbridge Pride Fest, after City Council gave organizers the go ahead to celebrate the event.

In the past there have been instances of vandalism that have taken place on the temporary sidewalks.

The new permanent crosswalks will be in place well before this year’s Return to Pride events set to get underway from June 20-25th, 2022.
