EDMONTON, AB – The Alberta RCMP Cybercrime Investigative Team (CIT) has laid charges against an Edmonton man after attempts were made to access private information contained in the Alberta Health vaccine portal.

The charges were laid June 18, 2022 in connection to an investigation that was launched by Alberta RCMP in November 2021.

The Alberta RCMP CIT says it was a complex investigation involving the examination of a large volume of forensic digital evidence that took considerable time to complete.

Alberta RCMP says based on recommendations from the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, Thomas Dang, 27, of Edmonton was issued a summons for contravening section 107(2) of the Health Information Act.

Dang is scheduled to appear in Edmonton Provincial Court July 27, 2022. If convicted, he could face a fine of up to $200,000.

The Alberta RCMP Cybercrime Investigative Team was established in 2021 under the Alberta RCMP Federal Serious and Organized Crime Branch. The team is mandated to investigate both federal and provincial matters related to cybercrime.
