Jul 15, 2022 | 11:50 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge region has gone up from a Level 1 Heat Alert to a Level 2 Heat Alert.

The City of Lethbridge received notification from Alberta Health that Environment and Climate Change Canada has upgraded Thursday’s Level 1 Heat Alert on Friday, July 15, 2022.

A Level 2 Heat Alert is issued when there is a “high change” of the forecasted conditions. The predicted daytime high for Friday, July 15, 2022 is 33 degrees Celsius, with a nighttime low of 16. The hot conditions are anticipated to continue throughout the weekend, with a daytime high of 33 degrees being forecast for Saturday, July 16 and a high of 28 degrees Celsius for Sunday, July 17.

According to the City of Lethbridge extreme temperature response protocol, under a Level 2 Heat Alert, administration and staff will meet with stakeholders to discuss implementing the following actions:

  • The distribution of required resources like bottled water, food or clothing to vulnerable populations in conjunction with community partners like the Salvation Army;
  • Requesting local utilities to halt all service cancellations until after the extreme temperature event has passed;
  • Opening of additional cooling or healing centres; and
  • Activation of emergency shelters.

The City of Lethbridge is encouraging residents to check on their neighbors, friends and family to ensure they are staying cool and hydrated.

Heat waves can cause an increase of heat-related illnesses, enhance drought conditions and can cause a significant long-term draw on power.

Citizens are encouraged to be mindful of the use of electrical appliances and keep air-conditioning units at a moderate temperature to help prevent overloading the power grid.

Residents can use the WeatherCan App or visit the Weather Canada website for the latest updates for their region. More tips to beat the heat are available at the Government of Alberta website.
