LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes are losing Yegor Klavdiev for the 2022-2023 season after he opted to begin his professional career in Belarus.

Klavdiev, 19, was first selected by the Hurricanes in the first round of the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft in 2021 and had 61 appearances for the Hurricanes during his time in Lethbridge.

In a media release, Hurricanes General Manager Peter Anholt says it’s disappointing to lose Klavdiev, but wishes him luck.

“We are really disappointed about the news of Klavdiev not returning. It’s disappointing to lose a good player who was going to be a key 19-year-old for us this coming season and someone that we were going to count on,” said Anholt. “The timing isn’t great for us, but his decision was made, and we respect that and wish him the best in his next step.”

Klavdiev wrote this statement to Lethbridge and the Hurricanes:

“Hello Lethbridge. Thank you very much for accepting me into your city. You provided me incredible care and support. Thanks to all the Hurricanes coaching staff and the fans for believing in me; it was a great season last year, but I have to move on. While I was away from home during this difficult time, your support helped me out! Thank you to each and every one of you. Thanks for everything Lethbridge and the Hurricanes.”

Klavdiev continues, “Playing in Canada has been my dream since childhood, and I made it come true. I promise you, despite the circumstances, I will remember you and I will always say you are the best fans! Thanks to all of you for everything.”

The Hurricanes are back in action on September 9, where they will host the Medicine Hat Tigers.
