Pence, newly burnished by Jan. 6 hearings, pressing ahead with presidential ambitions

Jul 26, 2022 | 8:45 AM

WASHINGTON — Two of the central characters in America’s January 6 drama are back in the national capital — both of them with presidential ambitions.

Former vice-president Mike Pence, who refused to do Donald Trump’s bidding as rioters ransacked Capitol Hill that day, is speaking at a conservative youth conference.

Advisers say Pence remains keen on seeking the Republican nomination for president in 2024, regardless of who he’s running against.

That could well include Trump himself, also speaking today in D.C., who is also hinting broadly that he wants back into the White House.

It’s the first time the former president has appeared in Washington since he grudgingly surrendered the Oval Office to Joe Biden last year.

A new online poll by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies suggests neither man would have much impact on how people north of the border view the U.S.

A majority of people surveyed July 8-10 say while the U.S. is currently the most powerful country in the world, it will be overtaken by China within 10 years.
