Lethbridge Terry Fox Run moving away from Civic Centre

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new location has been announced for the 2022 Lethbridge Terry Fox Run.

The run conventionally takes place around the Civic Centre track in downtown Lethbridge.

The group, however, says in a social media post that they have decided to relocate this year’s event to Legacy Ridge park.

“It is after a great deal of discussion, heartfelt compassion, and consideration for all aspects of our Run that we have chosen a new venue for the 2022 Lethbridge Terry Fox Run,” says the organization.

The decision was made after observing the tent encampment in the Civic Centre park.

“The encampment that exists at the Civic Track is a terrible and unfortunate situation, and one that has grown far beyond our scope. We fully support the agencies who are working on solutions to the housing crisis, and supporting the individuals who are suffering from a lack of resources.”

The local Terry Fox Run group says, although Fox would want to find a way to include every person, regardless of housing or economic circumstances, he would have also placed a great amount of consideration into the safety of those taking part.

Now that the new location has been chosen, they are branding this year’s walk as “Celebrate a Legacy in Legacy!”

The 2022 Lethbridge Terry Fox Run will take place on September 18, 2022, at Legacy Ridge Park. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m and the run will start at 10:00 a.m.

The encampment at the Civic Centre Park has become a growing issue in recent months as dozens of individuals experiencing homelessness have been residing in tents in the park.

The City of Lethbridge, alongside the Lethbridge Police Service and other service providers, have been conducting weekly clean-ups. Residents were served a “notice to vacate” the premises on Wednesday, August 17, 2022.
