New heat records in 24 Alberta communities Aug. 31

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The latest heat wave in the province is setting records in many communities.

Environment Canada says Wednesday, August 31, 2022, was the hottest August 31 on record for 22 communities, while another two tied their previous records.

Among the communities with new heat records, the Esther area was the warmest as the mercury hit 35.8 degrees Celsius.

With a maximum of 33.7 degrees, the Three Hills area broke its previous record which was set in 1929.

Lethbridge had its hottest August 31 since 1983 with a high of 33.8.

A Level 2 Heat Alert has been issued for the City of Lethbridge. Officials say that heat waves can cause an increase in heat-related illness, enhanced drought conditions, and can cause a significant long-term draw on power.

Environment Canada forecasts highs above 30 degrees Celsius every day this week in Lethbridge.
