BANFF, AB – Update: Banff RCMP has laid a charge of second degree murder against John Proule, 20, of Lake Country, B.C. A second suspect was arrested but was released without charges.

RCMP is continuing to investigate a homicide in Banff.

Officers were called to a local drinking establishment on Banff Avenue at approximately 12:09 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2022.

Upon arrival, RCMP found a 27-year-old man from Foothills County who was injured. He was taken to hospital where he was later declared deceased.

Two men were taken into custody nearby. As charges have yet to be officially sworn in in court, their names cannot be released.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes has taken over the investigation and are being assisted by Banff RCMP and the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit.

This homicide is said to be unrelated to a homicide that occurred at a Banff bar on Friday, August 5, 2022.

Banff RCMP Staff Sgt. Buxton-Carr says he understands the public’s concern considering that there have been two homicides in the community in one month, but these are isolated incidents and there is no further concern for the safety of the public.

“Our officers are committed to your safety and protecting our community,” Buxton-Carr. “Banff RCMP actively patrol the downtown core, including the pedestrian zone, every night to provide a visible deterrent to crime and are available at all times to respond to calls from the public for assistance.”

RCMP is looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information about it.

Those with information are asked to contact Banff RCMP at 403-763-6600, their local police, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
