LETHBRIDGE, AB – A roller derby coach in Lethbridge has been named to Canada’s national team.

Caroline Reimer is the head coach of the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild (LRDG). The Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA) has appointed Reimer as the head coach for the Canadian Junior Roller Derby team to compete in the 2023 JRDA World Cup in France. The event is scheduled for July 28-30, 2023.

Reimer was previously named as assistant coach of the team in 2020, but the world cup was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She said, “Seeing the skaters miss out on their world cup experience during the pandemic was heartbreaking.”

“Applying for the 2023 head coach position was important to me as I felt we did not get a chance to show the world what Canada has to offer. We have some unfinished business. I am thrilled for the opportunity to take it on,” Reimer stated.

The coach said her priorities going into 2023 are working with the rest of the coaching staff to build a team for fit international play.

Reimer said, “We are hosting in-person tryouts in Ontario and Alberta and it’s open to all genders. When we get to France in 2023, we’ll be playing against teams from the United States, France, Australia and Britain. It will be an unforgettable experience for all.”

In the meantime, Reimer is focusing her attention on preparing junior skaters in Lethbridge for tryouts. She said, “These skaters are motivated to work hard to earn their spot.”

“The previous world cup team had six local skaters, so they know it’s within their reach.”

Reimer has been coaching with the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild for 10 years. The league consists of an aged eight to 17 junior program and an 18-plus adult program. The local organization will be accepting new skater registration on September 14, 2022. More details are available at the LRDG website.
