College and university sports recap: Sept. 20, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a jam-packed weekend for both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and the University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s basketball team hit the court at Magrath High School for an exhibition game on Saturday, September 17, 2022. The team defeated CTA West Calgary 93-85.

The Kodiaks host St. Mary’s University in an exhibition match-up at 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20. Then on Thursday, September 22 at 7:50 p.m., the team will visit St. Mary’s University for an exhibition rematch.

It was an up-and-down weekend for the Kodiaks women’s and men’s soccer teams.

The women’s soccer team tied 1-1 against Olds College on Saturday, September 17, before suffering a 2-0 loss to SAIT on Sunday, September 18. The women’s team is now 2-1-1 on the year.

The Kodiaks will visit the University of Alberta-Augustana in Camrose at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 24.

On Saturday, September 17, the men’s soccer team tied 2-2 against Olds College in conference play. On Sunday, September 18, the club lost 6-0 to the SAIT Trojans. The team’s record is now 1-1-2. The Kodiaks face Red Deer Polytechnic in a road game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 25.

The SAIT Trojan hosted the second Grand Prix cross country event of the season, known as the Jordan Fish Memorial. The Kodiaks were one of the teams participating.

The Lethbridge College women’s cross country team took third place in the team event with 82 points. Red Deer finished in first place, while St. Mary’s University finished second.

The Lethbridge College men’s cross country team placed third in the team event with 57 points.

Next up on the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) cross country schedule is the third Grand Prix of the season on Saturday, October 1, 2022 in Edmonton.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The U of L women’s soccer team ended their weekend with a tie and a loss.

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, the Pronghorns tied 1-1 with the visiting UBC Okanagan Heat. Hailey Slobodian scored the lone goal for the U of L, while Amanda White scored for UBC Okanagan.

On Sunday, September 18, the U of L hosted the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack. Hailey Slobodian scored her second goal of the weekend, while teammate Alexa Evis scored her first of the season. Their two goals were not enough, as the Wolfpack scored three on route to a 3-2 victory.

The Pronghorns will look to redeem themselves against the University of the Fraser Valley Tuesday, September 20 at 6:00 p.m. in Lethbridge. The match is a make-up game from a postponed match originally scheduled on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

The women’s team record now sits at 0-4-1 on the season going into Tuesday’s game.

The men’s Pronghorn soccer club suffered two losses this weekend. They fell 4-1 against Trinity Western University on Saturday, September 17. Kai Sakaguchi scored the only goal for the U of L.

The team lost 5-0 to the visiting University of Northern British Columbia on Sunday, September 18. The loss dropped the club’s record to 1-6 on the year.

The men’s soccer team visits the University of Victoria on Friday, September 23 at 7:15 p.m.

The women’s rugby team earned their first win of the season on Saturday, September 17. The club defeated the visiting University of Alberta Pandas 17-13.

The U of L now has a record of 1-2 on the season and will visit the University of Victoria for a match starting at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2022.
