Sep 26, 2016 | 11:26 AM

HINTON – A central Alberta forestry company is facing numerous charges related to the “release of substances into the atmosphere.”

Alberta Environment and Parks entered six counts under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, and another count under the Dangerous Goods Transportation and Handling Act against West Fraser Mills Ltd.

It’s alleged that the pulp mill, operated near Hinton, released the substances around September 20, and failed to report it to Alberta Environment and Parks.

West Fraser Mills officials are set to appear in court on October 19, in Hinton for the following:

– Releasing or permitting the release of a substance that causes or may cause a significant adverse effect;

– Failing to immediately report the release to the department as required;

– Contravening a term or condition of an approval;

– Failing to follow dangerous goods safety requirements while unloading chemicals from a truck

In a short release on Monday (Sep. 26), Alberta Environment and Parks stated that it focuses on education, prevention and enforcement to ensure all Albertans can enjoy a clean and healthy environment. It also has a number of options it can employ to hold companies accountable for environmental regulations.
