Lethbridge Hurricanes claim 5-4 win in home opener against Medicine Hat

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Coming off a tough 9-1 loss to open their 2022-2023 regular season, the Lethbridge Hurricanes were looking for redemption at their home opener on Friday, September 30, 2022.

It was a rematch against the Medicine Hat Tigers, who handed the ‘Canes the 9-1 defeat on September 24, but this time, the action was at the ENMAX Centre in Lethbridge.

The home team took advantage of the roar of their home crowd, earning a 5-4 victory.

FIRST PERIOD

Eleven seconds into the game, Medicine Hat’s Rhett Parsons was issued a minor penalty for roughing, along with Lethbridge’s Joe Arntsen. Just a few seconds later, Arnsten’s teammate was given a minor for high sticking at the 17-second mark of the game.

Brendan Lee took advantage of the power play for Medicine Hat and knocked one in at the 1:44 mark to put the Tigers up 1-0. Jett Jones of the Hurricanes responded at 8:24, tying the game with his first goal of the season.

At the 13:29 mark of the first, Oasiz Wiesblatt of the Tigers and Lethbridge’s Arntsen got into it and were both sent to the box with roughing minor penalties.

Minutes later, at the 17:33 mark, Medicine Hat’s Pavel Bocharov was issued a minor for slashing. This put Lethbridge on the power play, and they took full advantage. Noah Chadwick scored his first goal of the season at the 18:58 mark to put the ‘Canes up 2-1.

Lethbridge’s lead was short-lived, as Medicine Hat’s Andrew Basha scored at 19:49 just before the sound of the buzzer to signal the end of the period. The score was 2-2 at the end of the first.

SECOND PERIOD

Eighteen seconds into the second frame, Bogdans Hodass of the Tigers received a minor for tripping. Tristan Zandee of the Hurricanes was later sent to the box at 7:22, receiving a minor for hooking. At the 8:46 mark, Tiger Pavel Bocharov got the whistle for interference.

A few moments later, Lethbridge went up 3-2 thanks to a goal from Nolan Bentham at the 13:44 mark. That would end up being the lone goal of the period.

Before the second period ended, Medicine Hat’s Rhett Parsons was issued a minor penalty for roughing at the 16:21 mark. His teammate Hodass was called for interference at the 19:29 mark.

THIRD PERIOD

Lethbridge started the final period rolling, with Cole Shepard scoring 40 seconds into the frame. This put the home team up 4-2.

Jett Jones scored his second of the game for Lethbridge at the 5:09 mark, putting the ‘Canes up 5-2. The Tigers would not go away easy, scoring a couple more goals before the end of the game.

At 5:59, Lethbridge’s Miguel Marques was given a minor penalty for roughing. At the 6:23 mark, Jett Jones was issued a minor for boarding.

At 7:58, Medicine Hat used the power play to their advantage, with Oasiz Wiesblatt scoring his third goal of the season. Wiesblatt was sent to the box shortly after, at 14:04, with a minor for slashing.

At the 16:18 mark, Rhett Parsons of the Tigers, and Lethbridge’s Jett Jones each received a game misconduct penalty. At the same time, Hurricane Chase Pauls received a minor penalty for boarding.

Lethbridge’s Tyson Zimmer was given a minor for high sticking at the 17:11 mark of the third.

Tyler MacKenzie gave Medicine Hat a glimmer of hope, scoring at the 19:31 mark. However, it was too late, and the Hurricanes pulled away with a 5-4 Friday night victory.

UP NEXT

The Hurricanes have the next few nights off and will be in Saskatoon on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, against the Saskatoon Blades. Tuesday night’s match-up is the first of a three-game road trip that will also see a meeting with the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday, October 5 and a game against the Red Deer Rebels on Friday, October 7.

The ‘Canes return home to the ENMAX Centre on Saturday, October 8 against Prince Albert.
