College and university sports preview: Oct. 7, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Thanksgiving long weekend does not mean it’s a weekend off for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

In addition to enjoying a turkey dinner, student-athletes will be in action this weekend.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Prior to the weekend action, both the men and women’s Kodiaks basketball teams hit the court Thursday night, October 6, 2022.

In exhibition play, the men’s basketball team beat Red Deer Polytechnic 78-69. The women’s basketball team lost 79-37 to Red Deer Polytechnic.

The women’s basketball team is on the road against NAIT for an exhibition match-up at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 7. They follow that game up with a 4:00 p.m. meeting with Keyano College on Saturday, October 8. Both exhibition games will be played at Red Deer Polytechnic. The Kodiaks start their regular season on Friday, October 21, at home against Olds College.

The men’s basketball team is at Red Deer Polytechnic for a 4:00 p.m. game against Northwestern Polytechnic on Friday, October 7. On Saturday, October 8 at 2:00 p.m., the Kodiaks will face NAIT, again on the court at Red Deer Polytechnic. The Kodiaks have one more exhibition match-up, against the University of Lethbridge on Wednesday, October 12 before starting their regular season at home against Olds College on Friday, October 21.

The women’s soccer team holds a record of 5-2-1 on the regular season and won their last match-up in dramatic fashion against Ambrose University on Saturday, October 1. The final score was 11-0. The team hosts SAIT at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 8. The Kodiaks will then visit Olds College at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 9.

The Kodiaks men’s soccer team is 3-1-3 on the regular season. On Saturday, October 8 at 2:00 p.m., they host the SAIT Trojans. That game is followed by a road meeting with Olds College at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 9. In their last game on Saturday, October 1, they defeated Ambrose University 5-2.

The men’s volleyball team wraps up exhibition play this weekend. The Kodiaks face Medicine Hat College in Lethbridge at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7. On Saturday, October 8 at 11:00 a.m., the Kodiaks host Assiniboine Community College. Their day is not done there, though, as they then face Ambrose University at 1:00 p.m. and at 3:00 p.m., they have a rematch with Assiniboine. The Kodiaks starts the regular season on Saturday, October 15 against SAIT.

Meanwhile, the women’s volleyball team does have this weekend off and starts the regular season on Saturday, October 15 against the SAIT Trojans. In their last exhibition game, the Kodiaks beat Canadian Mennonite University 3-2 on Sunday, October 2.

In other Kodiaks news, women’s soccer star Nikki Stahl was named the female Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, October 4. The fourth-year student-athlete scored three goals and added three assists while helping the Kodiaks to two wins last weekend. The team defeated Medicine Hat College 3-0 on Friday, September 30 and beat Ambrose University 11-0 on Saturday, October 1.

Cole Herbert was named the Kodiaks male Athlete of the Week. The second-year member of the cross country team was the second Kodiak to cross the finish line at the ACAC Grand Prix #3 in Edmonton on Saturday, October 1. Herbert’s performance helped Lethbridge College finish third overall.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The U of L women’s basketball team is in Regina, Saskatchewan on Saturday, October 8 for a 7:00 p.m. for its first exhibition game of the year against the University of Regina Cougars.

They follow that game up with a meeting against the University of Northern British Columbia at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 9. That game will also be played in Regina. The regular season starts on Friday, November 4 against the University of Victoria.

The men’s basketball team is on the court Wednesday, October 12 for an exhibition against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. Like the women’s team, the men’s team starts its regular season on Friday, November 4 against the University of Victoria.

The women’s soccer team is in Edmonton against the University of Alberta Pandas at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 8. On Sunday, October 9 at 12:00 p.m., the Pronghorns face MacEwan University in Edmonton. It’s been a tough season for the U of L team, as they currently hold a record of 0-8-2. In their last match-up on Sunday, October 2, they lost 5-0 against the University of Saskatchewan.

The men’s soccer team has this weekend off and is back on the field Friday, October 14 against the University of Calgary Dinos. On Sunday, October 2, the Pronghorns lost 2-1 against MacEwan University. The men’s team has a record of 1-9-1 on the regular season.

It’s a big weekend for the women’s rugby team. They host the University of Calgary at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7 for their final conference game of the season. The team is 1-4 on the season and lost their last match-up 74-25 against the University of British Columbia on Sunday, September 25.

The match-up will also mark the second annual Bo Smith and Co. game, which supports childhood cancer awareness.

The U of L noted that 300,000 children around the world are diagnosed with cancer each year. Bo Smith and Co. aims to ease the burdens of these kids and their families. 100% of profits collected are donated to the children and families affected by childhood cancer. Pronghorn Athletics is running an online 50/50 draw in support of this initiatives. Tickets are available through the Pronghorn Athletics website.

In other Pronghorn Athletics news, the latest Athletes of the Week are Alasdair Coyle and Alexis Bradford. Coyle stars for the men’s soccer team. On the season, he has started 10 of 11 games and is tied for second in scoring on the team, with a goal and two assists.

Bradford suits up for the women’s soccer team. The first-year player has appeared in all 10 games for the Pronghorns this season, starting nine of those, and has recorded one assists and four shot attempts.
