College and university sports preview: Oct. 14, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Another weekend means another round of action for student-athletes with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

Here is a look at what’s on tap for the post-secondary teams this weekend.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Kodiaks men’s basketball team ended its pre-season exhibition play on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 against the U of L Pronghorns. The Kodiaks lost 76-70. The team starts its regular season on Friday, October 21 against the Olds College Broncos.

The women’s basketball team continues to practice ahead of the start of the regular season, also on Friday, October 21 against Olds College.

The cross country team is in Calgary on Saturday, October 15 for the Running Room Grand Prix #4, hosted by St. Mary’s University. The event will be an important tune-up for the Kodiaks ahead of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) championships on Saturday, October 29 in Edmonton.

The women’s soccer team has two games to wrap the regular season this weekend. At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, the Kodiaks face Red Deer Polytechnic. On Sunday, October 16 at 12:00 p.m., it’s a meeting with the University of Alberta-Augustana. The team has a record of 6-3-1 on the season.

The men’s soccer team concludes the ACAC regular season at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15 against Red Deer Polytechnic. The team has a season record of 3-3-3.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams will compete at Comet Stadium in Raymond this weekend. The stadium is the host site of the 2022 ACAC Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships, presented by Southern Alberta Homes.

The women’s volleyball team faces the SAIT Trojans at Rally Pointe in Calgary at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15 to start the regular season.

Meanwhile, the men’s volleyball team begins the regular season at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15 against the SAIT Trojans, with that game also being played at Rally Pointe.

In other Kodiaks news, women’s soccer star Ashley Sazalski has been named the Kodiaks female Athlete of the Week. The third year forward scored three goals in the Kodiaks’ 5-2 win against Olds College on Sunday, October 9. She sits second in scoring in the ACAC.

Midfielder Vincent Dyck of the men’s soccer team was named the male Athlete of the Week. The second year student-athlete earned player of the game honours in the Kodiaks’ match-up against SAIT on Saturday, October 8.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The U of L men’s basketball team faced Lethbridge College in an exhibition game on Wednesday, October 12 and won 76-70. The Pronghorns travel to Montreal this weekend for the McGill Basketball Classic. They will face McGill University at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14. That will be followed by a meeting against the University of Ottawa at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15. The weekend concludes with a match-up against Saint Mary’s University at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16. The team starts its Canada West regular season on Friday, November 4 against the University of Victoria.

The women’s basketball team is 1-1 in exhibition action this month. Coming off a 78-70 win against the University of Northern British Columbia on Sunday, October 9, the Pronghorns face the University of the Fraser Valley in Vancouver at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14. Their weekend schedule closes on Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. with another game in Vancouver, this time against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

The men’s soccer team is 1-9-1 on the regular season. In their most recent game on Sunday, October 2, the team lost 2-1 to MacEwan University. They will look to gain some momentum this weekend with just three games left on their schedule. They host the University of Calgary Dinos at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14. On Sunday, October 16 at 2:15 p.m., the Pronghorns host Mount Royal University. Their last game of the regular season will be on Saturday, October 22 at 2:15 p.m., when they will host the University of Saskatchewan.

It’s been a tough season for the women’s soccer team. The team holds a record of 0-10-2, with two games left on their regular season schedule. At 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, they host the University of Manitoba Bisons. Their regular season closes at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16 on home field against the University of Winnipeg.

In other Pronghorn Athletics news, although the team did not qualify for a spot in the Canada West final four, women’s rugby team prop Savanna Collison was named the U SPORTS Women’s Rugby Player of the Week. The fifth-year player scored two tries in the Pronghorns’ season, closing a 15-10 win against the University of Calgary on Friday, October 7.

To end her career with the U of L, Collison finished the season leading the Pronghorns in tries with seven in six games. She also tied for second in the conference in try scoring and was named the Canada West Rugby 15s Player of the Week. Collison was also named the Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 9, 2022.
