College and university sports recap: Oct. 18, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A number of post-secondary teams have closed out their regular. Here is a recap of what the Lethbridge College and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns were up to this weekend.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Kodiaks men’s soccer team closed out their regular season over the weekend. On Saturday, October 15, 2022, the Kodiaks finished in a 2-2 tie against Red Deer Polytechnic. Vincent Dyck and Brandon Francis scored goals for Lethbridge College. The Kodiaks finished the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season with a record of 3-3-4.

The women’s soccer team had two games to wrap up their regular season. On Saturday, October 15, the Kodiaks lost 3-2 against Red Deer Polytechnic. The team followed that loss up with a 3-0 victory over the University of Alberta-Augustana. The Kodiaks saw a goal from Ashley Sazalski and two goals from Montanna Rousselle. The women’s team ended their regular season with a record of 7-4-1.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams have qualified for the 2022 ACAC Soccer Championships. The tournament will be hosted by the Kodiaks at Comet Stadium in Raymond from Friday, October 28 to Sunday, October 30.

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team started the regular season off in dominant fashion. On Saturday, October 15, the team defeated the SAIT Trojans 3-0. The Kodiaks face the Olds College Broncos on Friday, October 21.

The women’s volleyball team lost in their first game of the regular season. They faced SAIT on Saturday, October 15 and fell 3-2. Up next for the team is a meeting with Olds College on Friday, October 21.

In Calgary, the Kodiaks cross country team competed at the ACAC Grand Prix #4. The event was their final tune up before conference championships on Saturday, October 29. Overall, the Kodiaks men finished third overall. Cooper Williams was the first man to cross the finish line for the Kodiaks. The women placed fifth, with Maria Boix-Frias being the first Kodiak to cross the finish line.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The U of L men’s basketball team fared well at the McGill Redbirds Basketball Classic Tournament in Montreal over the weekend. On Friday, October 14, the Pronghorns defeated McGill University 89-72. They lost to the University of Ottawa 80-65 on Saturday, October 15 before picking up the 100-92 win over Saint Mary’s University on Sunday, October 16. The Pronghorns’ two wins and one loss for the tournament earned them a second-place finish. Ottawa claimed the top spot at the event.

Up next for the team is a 5:00 p.m. exhibition game against Carroll College in Helena, Montana on Friday, October 28.

The women’s basketball team lost 72-67 on Friday, October 14 against the University of the Fraser Valley in exhibition play. On Saturday, October 15, they lost 82-76 to the University of British Columbia. The Pronghorns have another exhibition game on Friday, October 21 in Lethbridge against the UBC Okanagan Thunderbirds.

The men’s soccer team beat the University of Calgary Dinos 4-2 on Friday, October 14. On Sunday, October 16, they tied 2-2 against Mount Royal University. The Pronghorns end their regular season on Saturday, October 22 when they host the University of Saskatchewan.

The women’s soccer team lost 1-0 against the University of Manitoba on Saturday, October 15.

The Pronghorns will not be competing in the playoffs but ended their regular season with a 6-1 victory on Sunday, October 16 against the University of Winnipeg. Hailey Slobodian impressed with four goals in the first half of the game. Tory Clements and Alexis Bradford scored the remaining two goals for the U of L, while Jazmyn Castor scored the lone goal for the visiting University of Winnipeg. The U of L finished the season with a record of 1-11-2.
