College and university sports preview: Oct. 21, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It’s another weekend full of sports for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball teams tip-off their regular seasons this weekend.

The women’s team hosts Olds College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21, 2022. On Saturday, October 22, it’s a rematch against the Broncos at 1:00 p.m. in Lethbridge.

The men’s basketball team will also face Olds College back-to-back, with their season opening game at 8:00 p.m. in Lethbridge on Friday, October 21. Their weekend concludes with a rematch at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams are off this weekend. They are getting set for the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Soccer Championships, which start on Friday, October 28. The Kodiaks host the tournament at Comet Stadium in Raymond.

The men’s and women’s volleyball teams continue their regular seasons. Coming off a 3-2 season opening loss against SAIT on Saturday, October 15, the women’s team faces Olds College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21. They will follow that up with a rematch against the Broncos at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22. Both games will be played in Olds.

The men’s volleyball team started their regular season off with a 3-0 victory against SAIT on Saturday, October 15. They face Olds College on the road at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21. The teams will face off in a rematch at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22, with that game also played in Olds.

The Kodiaks cross country team is gearing up for the ACAC championships on Saturday, October 29.

The Lethbridge College Esports team does not have any competitions this weekend, however, fans can view a season schedule for the team at the Kodiaks Twitch webpage.

In other Kodiaks news, Meaghan Welby of the women’s soccer team was named the female Athlete of the Week at Lethbridge College. Welby earned player of the game honours for her performance in a 3-2 loss against nationally ranked Red Deer Polytechnic on Saturday, October 15. Welby played in her last ACAC league game on Sunday, October 16, where she helped lead the Kodiaks to a 3-0 win against the University of Alberta-Augustana.

Cooper Williams of the cross country team led the Kodiaks at the ACAC Grand Prix #4 on Saturday, October 15. He finished eighth overall in the eight-kilometre men’s race with a time of 26:52. This marks Williams’ second Athlete of the Week honour for the season.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The U of L women’s basketball team has a couple of final exhibition games before starting the Canada West regular season. The Pronghorns are on home court at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21 against UBC Okanagan. It’s a 2:00 p.m. rematch against the Heat in Lethbridge on Saturday, October 22.

Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team is off this weekend. The Pronghorns will travel to Montana for their final exhibition games on Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29.

The Pronghorn Athletics women’s soccer team has finished the regular season and will not be competing in the playoffs.

The men’s soccer team, however, has one more game on the regular season schedule. The Pronghorns host the University of Saskatchewan at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 22.

The U of L swimming team hosts the LASC Fall Challenge from Friday, October 21 to Sunday, October 23.

In other Pronghorn news, Hailey Slobodian was named the Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 16.

The women’s soccer second year student-athlete tied a Canada West record for goals scored in a half in the U of L’s season closing 6-1 win over the Winnipeg Wesman on Sunday, October 16. In that game, Slobodian scored four goals in the first half, becoming the first player in Canada West women’s soccer history since 2016 to score that many goals in one half. She ended the season with a team high eight goals, which tied her for sixth in Canada West goals scoring. Additionally, she recorded three assists to finish the season with 11 points.

Kai Sakaguchi was named the male Athlete of the Week. The second year member of the soccer team scored three goals over two games to lead the Pronghorns to a 1-0-1 record over the Friday, October 14 to Sunday, October 16 period. Sakaguchi was also named the Canada West Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. With his three goals last weekend, he became the team lead in goals scored this season with five.

Pronghorn Athletics has also announced a new program this week, aimed at helping student-athletes balance their academic studies with their athletic endeavors.
