Lethbridge County seeking feedback on speed limit bylaw

Oct 25, 2022 | 9:45 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Officials in Lethbridge County are developing a new bylaw that would enforce speed limits in the area.

At the Thursday, October 20, 2022, meeting of Lethbridge County Council, first reading was approved for a Speed Limit Bylaw. Before council can give second and third readings, feedback from the public is being sought.

A Traffic Control Bylaw was adopted in 1995, but it had been amended several times since, creating different speed regulations in numerous communities.

An excerpt from the October 20 Lethbridge County Council agenda states, “Past County practice has been inconsistent with speed limits, hamlets have a variety of different speed limits, rural subdivisions, and random speed signs in areas. Prior direction has involved petitions from residents for speed limit changes that were motioned by Council on an as-presented basis.”

The proposed bylaw would aim to bring consistency to speed limits throughout the county.

Other goals of the bylaw include protecting the safety of road users, ensuring proper road use, minimizing maintenance costs, and providing openness and transparency.

A survey is available on the Lethbridge County website, which can be filled out until November 30, 2022.

Once the survey comes to a close, the results will be presented to council for consideration at the December 15, 2022 meeting.
