College and university sports recap: October 25, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Two Lethbridge College Kodiaks teams started their regular seasons this weekend, while a University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorn Athletics team ended theirs.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams started their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular seasons this past weekend.

The Kodiaks women’s basketball team began their campaign with two straight wins. On Friday, October 21, 2022, they beat Olds College 73-68. Kitawna Sparks led the way for the Kodiaks with 24 points. On Saturday, October 22, Lethbridge College beat the Broncos 81-73. Sparks led scoring for Lethbridge with 28 points.

The men’s basketball team started their season with two straight wins as well. On Friday, October 21, the Kodiaks beat Olds College 67-52, with Paycen Blackmore leading the Kodiaks with 21 points. On Saturday, October 22, Lethbridge College beat the Broncos 91-75. Brady Baines scored 17 points to lead the Kodiaks, while Taylor Barfuss scored 14 off the bench.

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams face Briercrest College on Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29.

The men’s and women’s volleyball teams were both up against Olds College. On Friday, October 21, the men’s team beat the Broncos 3-0 and followed that up with a 3-1 win on Saturday, October 22. The men’s team is now 3-0 on the regular season.

The women’s volleyball team beat Olds College 3-0 on Friday, October 21. That was followed by a 3-1 victory on Saturday, October 22. The women’s team now boasts a record of 2-1 for the season.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The Pronghorn Athletics women’s basketball team defeated UBC Okanagan 71-69 on Friday, October 21. Millay Johnson had 25 points and eight steals to lead the Pronghorns to victory. The team finished the exhibition schedule on Saturday, October 22 with an 83-61 win in a rematch with the Heat. Jessica Haenni and Abby Graves each had 14 points for Lethbridge. The team starts the Canada West regular season on Friday, November 4 against the University of Victoria.

The men’s soccer team closed out the regular season on Saturday, October 22. The Pronghorns did not qualify for the post-season. On Saturday, they lost a close game against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The final score was 1-0. The Pronghorns finished the regular season with a record of 2-10-2.
