LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) is asking for the public’s help in an investigation into an alleged carjacking.

At approximately 4:50 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2022, police responded to a 911 report that a 77-year-old woman had been assaulted and had her vehicle stolen.

The incident took place on the 600 block of 4 Avenue South at the Bank of Montreal parking lot.

According to LPS, the investigation determined that a senior had parked her Hyundai Santa Fe SUV and was making her way inside when a man grabbed her from behind, forcibly took her keys, and threw her to the ground.

The man allegedly stole the woman’s vehicle and left the area at a high rate of speed.

The suspect is described as being in his late teens. He reportedly had black hair and was wearing dark clothing and a dark-coloured touque.

The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The following day, police located the vehicle abandoned in the westbound lanes of Highway 3 east of Lethbridge at a rest stop just south of Range Road 21-2 near Marshall Metals Scrap Recycling.

LPS wants to speak with anyone who may have been travelling through the area between 4:50 p.m. on November 4 and 1:40 p.m. on November 5, 2022, and has dash cam footage or picked up a hitchhiker. The public can phone police at 403-328-4444 and reference file 22024253.
