College and university sports preview: November 25, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns will be busy this weekend. Both post-secondaries have teams in action.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the Kodiaks women’s and men’s basketball teams are on home court this weekend.

The women’s basketball team hosts Red Deer Polytechnic at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25, 2022. It’s a rematch at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26. The Kodiaks have six wins and two losses through eight games in the regular season.

Meantime, the Kodiaks men’s basketball team is undefeated with eight wins this season. The Kodiaks host Red Deer Polytechnic at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25. The two teams will duke it out in a rematch at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26.

Friday, November 25 marks the Kodiaks Athletics and Lethbridge College first Junior and Senior High School Appreciation Night of the season. Local area high school students, along with their chaperones, are invited to watch the Kodiaks basketball games against Red Deer Polytechnic for free. Attendees can also win prizes, enjoy games and a complimentary pre-game meal.

The Kodiaks women’s and men’s volleyball teams face Red Deer Polytechnic as well this weekend. However, they will be on the road in Red Deer.

The women’s volleyball team has five wins and two losses this regular season. They face Red Deer Polytechnic at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25 and at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26.

The men’s volleyball team is against Red Deer Polytechnic at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25 and at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26. The Kodiaks have six wins and one loss on the season.

In other Kodiaks news, Tylee Leavitt and Taylor Barfuss have been named the Athletes of the Week.

Tylee Leavitt plays for the women’s basketball team and scored 35 combined points in two games for the Kodiaks last weekend. On Friday, November 18, she helped the Kodiaks defeat The King’s University 90-74 with 26 points. In a 79-58 loss to the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, Leavitt scored nine points. In her first season with Lethbridge College, Leavitt is averaging just over 13 points, four rebounds and four assists per game.

Taylor Barfuss suits up for the men’s basketball team. In an 81-79 win against The King’s University on Friday, November 18, Barfuss scored 13 points. He followed that up with another 13-point performance in an 82-77 win against Concordia University of Edmonton.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L swim team hosts the 2022 Canada West Swimming Championship Friday, November 25 through to Sunday, November 27. Roughly 200 swimmers from across Western Canada are expected to be in Lethbridge for the championship event.

Both Pronghorn Athletics basketball teams compete this weekend.

Following two weekends in a row on the road, the women’s basketball team returns home to host Thompson Rivers University at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25. The teams will face off in a rematch at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26. The Pronghorns have three wins and three losses this season.

Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team has one win and five losses for the 2022-2023 campaign. The team is on home court hosting Thompson Rivers University at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25. It will be a rematch at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26.
