LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge (U of L) and Pronghorn Athletics are celebrating the successes of multiple student-athletes.

Every year, U SPORTS, the national sport governing body of university sports in Canada, honours athletes who excel in their respective sport, while maintaining an 80% average in academics. Those student-athletes are named as U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians.

For the 2021-2022 season, 75 out of 177 eligible U of L Pronghorns achieved that status. In a news release, Executive Director of Pronghorn Athletics Neil Langevin said, “The reality of being a student athlete is not glamorous as many would believe.”

He continued, “It is a daily grind of balancing personal life, academic achievement, and the pursuit of sport. It is not for the faint of heart and to succeed academically as an Academic All-Canadian is a remarkable accomplishment.”

The women’s soccer team had 15 members earn U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian honours. The women’s rugby program had 12 athletes recognized, with 11 members of the women’s basketball team achieved the Academic All-Canadian status.

There were 10 players from the men’s soccer team who achieved the status, while the U of L Track and Field men’s and women’s teams saw eight athletes recognized.

The men’s and women’s swim team had four student-athletes who earned honours. Two members of the men’s basketball team also made the list.

Since the All-Canadian program was started in 1990, a total of 1,371 Pronghorn varsity athletes have been named Academic All-Canadians.

A full list of the recipients from the U of L for the 2021-2022 academic year is available at the Pronghorn Athletics website.
