RCMP warn public of donating to legitimate charities over holiday season

GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB – An RCMP detachment in northern Alberta is offering some tips on what to watch for when donating to charity campaigns over the holidays.

The Grande Prairie RCMP says if you chose to donate this holiday season, make sure you know that your money is going to legitimate causes.

Police say to consider these factors when donating:

  • Don’t let anyone pressure you. A legitimate organization will respect your wishes if you do not want to donate to their cause.
  • Be assertive and do not be afraid to ask questions.
  • Never send cash and do not give out personal details, like your social insurance number, credit card, or banking information to a stranger.
  • Consider planned giving if you want to support a certain organization and decide beforehand how much you can afford to give. You can contact the organization directly and set up a monthly or one-time donation.

The Grande Prairie RCMP is participating in a food drive this Saturday, December 17, 2022 at the FreshCo grocery store, located at 9844 92 Street from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Officers will be collecting non-perishable food donations for the Salvation Army in hopes of filling up a police cruiser over the course of the day.
