GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB – An RCMP detachment in northern Alberta is offering some tips on what to watch for when donating to charity campaigns over the holidays.
The Grande Prairie RCMP says if you chose to donate this holiday season, make sure you know that your money is going to legitimate causes.
Police say to consider these factors when donating:
- Don’t let anyone pressure you. A legitimate organization will respect your wishes if you do not want to donate to their cause.
- Be assertive and do not be afraid to ask questions.
- Never send cash and do not give out personal details, like your social insurance number, credit card, or banking information to a stranger.
- Consider planned giving if you want to support a certain organization and decide beforehand how much you can afford to give. You can contact the organization directly and set up a monthly or one-time donation.
