Lethbridge police confirm reports of explosive device to be unfounded

The Lethbridge Police Service has laid charges against a man who allegedly threatened to detonate an explosive device.

Lethbridge Police Service have confirmed there was no threat to the community after receiving information there may have been an explosive in the back of a moving van.

Around noon on January 3, 2023, police responded to a report of an explosive device inside a moving company van parked along the 1000 block of 13 Street South.

The business had received a call that the device was going to be remotely detonated.

Police subsequently searched the van and no explosives were located.

Following further investigation, a male subject was identified and arrested without incident at a residence along the 1600 block of Scenic Drive South.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

(ORIGINAL STORY: January 3, 2023 at 12:38 p.m.) The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) says it is investigating reports of an explosive device inside a moving vehicle.

Officer received the report at approximately noon on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

LPS says the truck is parked and all of the occupants inside safely exited the vehicle.

“Police are currently evacuating some homes in the area as a precaution. Those impacted will be contacted directly by police,” says LPS in a public advisory.

Members of the public are asked to avoid the area for the time being.

LPS says updates will be provided as they become available.
