LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) says it is investigating multiple instances where pedestrians were struck by vehicles over the New Year’s weekend.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 30, 2022, LPS says it received a report that a man had been struck in the westbound lanes of Whoop-Up Drive.

The man remains in hospital with serious injuries, but is stable and is expected to survive.

Police say in a media release that the 36-year-old male pedestrian was initially on the pedestrian path before “intentionally running out onto the road.”

“Several vehicles narrowly missed him before he was struck. The driver of the vehicle that struck him was operating their vehicle in a safe and lawful matter and is not facing any charges,” says LPS.

The westbound lanes of Whoop-Up Drive were closed for more than two hours while police investigated.

The second collision occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2022.

Officers were called to a pedestrian collision along Scenic Drive South, south of the exit for Whoop-Up Drive.

LPS says the initial investigation determined that a man ran east along Scenic Drive and flagged down a vehicle in the northbound lanes.

“He banged on the hood and demanded a ride before proceeding to dive in front of a second vehicle,” police say in a media release.

The pedestrian sustain non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

According to LPS, the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was driving in a safe and lawful manner and is not facing any charges.

Jared Derrick Potts, 31, is charged with assault. He was also issued tickets for tampering with a motor vehicle and stunting.

Potts is scheduled to appear in court on the assault charge on April 19, 2023.
