Members of local wrestling scene earn provincial awards

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Local wrestling figures have been recognized for their efforts on the mat.

The Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association (AAWA) has announced that two members of the Lethbridge Amateur Wrestling Association (LAWA) with Outstanding Achievement. The Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI) wrestling program has also received an overall team award from the AAWA.

Pat Selk has received the 2022 AAWA Outstanding School Coach award, Shawn Daye-Finley was honoured with the 2022 AAWA Outstanding Contributor award, and LCI received the 2022 AAWA Outstanding School Team award.

Program Director with the AAWA, Andy Ross said in a news release that the awards were based on “work ethic, determination, talent and personal sacrifices for the sport of wrestling [that] are evident from [wrestlers’] tremendous results on the mat last season, as well as the growth of wrestling in the province as a whole.”

Pat Selk and Shawn Daye-Finley will receive their awards during a banquet in February.

President of the LAWA, Riley Ellis-Toddington said, “We’re very proud of both Shawn and Pat.”

Ellis-Toddington added, “Their selfless contribution to the sport of wrestling is demonstrated by this recognition of their efforts. Our program continues to grow and showcase the talent that originates here in Southern Alberta.”

The LAWA has been active for 35 years in the community and provides training for athlete six and up.
