College and university sports recap: January 9, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A handful of post-secondary teams in Lethbridge were in action this weekend.

Both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns had teams back on the court following the holiday winter break.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s volleyball teams returned to the court.

The Kodiaks hosted the SAIT Trojans on Saturday, January 7, 2023.

The men’s volleyball team secured a 3-0 victory, while the women’s volleyball team lost 3-2.

Both teams play this upcoming weekend. On Friday, January 13, the teams host Keyano College. That will be followed by a meeting in Lethbridge against Lakeland College on Saturday, January 14.

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team now has nine wins and three losses on the regular season, which puts them in first place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division.

The women’s volleyball team is in second place in the South Division with seven wins and five losses.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L Pronghorns basketball teams were both in action this weekend.

The teams were in Calgary facing the Mount Royal University Cougars.

On Friday, January 6, the men’s basketball team lost 84-75. Jeff Rodehutskors led the U of L with 15 points, while Holt Tomie had 18 for Mount Royal University. On Saturday, January 7, the Cougars beat the Pronghorns 85-79. Rodehutskors once again led the U of L in scoring, with 19 points. Keivonte Watts scored 26 points for the Cougars.

The Pronghorns men’s basketball team will be back on home court Friday, January 13 against the University of Saskatchewan. The U of L is in 14th place in the Canada West standings with four wins and eight losses on the regular season.

Meanwhile, the U of L women’s basketball team lost 62-57 to the Cougars on Friday, January 6. Kyra Collier was the top scorer for Lethbridge, with 19 points. Tanis Metcalfe scored 14 to lead the Cougars. On Saturday, January 7, Mount Royal University picked up the 72-62 win. Danielle Nadeau led all U of L scorers with 15 points, and Jordan Blaskin led the Cougars with 17 points.

The U of L women’s basketball team is in Lethbridge on Friday, January 13 to face the University of Saskatchewan. The Pronghorns are in 11th place in the Canada West standings with five wins and seven losses on the regular season.
