College and university sports preview: January 12, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It’s a busy few days ahead for local post-secondary teams, with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns in action.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball teams return to the court following their winter holiday break.

The Kodiaks women’s basketball team hosts the SAIT Trojans at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023. At 8:00 p.m., the men’s basketball team hosts SAIT.

The women’s basketball team currently sits in second place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division with a record of seven wins and four losses. The men’s basketball team leads the South Division with nine wins and two losses.

The Kodiaks women’s and men’s futsal teams both visit Medicine Hat College this weekend.

The women’s futsal team faces Medicine Hat at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14. That will be followed by a second match-up against the Rattlers at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The men’s futsal team faces Medicine Hat at 12:00 p.m. and at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Both the Kodiaks women’s and men’s volleyball teams are on home court over the weekend.

The women’s volleyball team plays Keyano College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13. At 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, the Kodiaks will battle Lakeland College. The Kodiaks are in second place in the ACAC South Division with seven wins and five losses on the regular season.

The men’s volleyball team leads the ACAC South Division with nine wins and three losses. The team will face Keyano College at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, followed by a meeting with Lakeland College at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14.

In other Kodiaks news, Elyse Doble and Gavin Moes have been named the Athletes of the Week.

Elyse Doble is a member of the women’s volleyball team. In a 3-2 loss against SAIT on Saturday, January 7, Doble had 15 digs and one assist.

Gavin Moes stars for the men’s volleyball team. On Saturday, January 7, he helped lead the Kodiaks to a 3-0 victory over SAIT. In the game, Moes had seven kills, zero errors on 14 attempts, and had a team-leading three service aces, two blocks and two digs.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

Both of the U of L basketball teams are in Lethbridge for a couple of weekend games.

The women’s basketball team faces the University of Saskatchewan at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13. The teams will compete in a rematch at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14. The Pronghorns are in 11th place in the Canada West standings, with five wins and seven losses.

Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team hosts the University of Saskatchewan at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13. That will be followed by a rematch at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14. The team is in 14th place in the Canada West standings with four wins and eight losses.
