LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was another successful outing for Lethbridge speed skaters to start 2023.

On Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8, local athletes competed in the Alberta Long Track Speed Skating Meet at the Olympic Oval in Calgary.

In the Junior Division, Riley Vanderburgh, Mitchell Wesseling, Braeden Kremenik, and Zachary Adelman represented Lethbridge. Adelman earned a silver medal as the second fastest skater overall at the event. He also won a gold medal as the fastest skater in the Neo-Junior B1 Division. Kremenik earned a silver medal in the Neo-Junior B2 Division.

In the Youth Division, Lethbridge had five total skaters on the ice. On the girls’ side, Zoe Wesseling, Zosia Adelman and Claire Peake competed. Adelman set a personal best in the 500-metre event with a time that was the ninth fastest in Canada this year for girls of her age.

On the boys’ side in the Youth Division, Wyatt Scratch won all but one of his races and earned a gold medal for the Ability 3 Division. Gavin Ogilvie captured two gold medals, one for being the top overall youth male skater and one for winning the Youth 13 Division. His time of 43.70 in the 500-metre event is now the third fastest time in Canada this year for any youth-aged skater.

Next up is the national qualifying event in Red Deer. The two top skaters in each division will qualify to represent Alberta at the Canadian Youth Long Track Championship in Fort St. John in February.

Meantime, this weekend, Mikka Eaves will compete at the Canada Cup in Laval, Quebec. Eaves is one of two female skaters representing Alberta at the national short track speed skating event.
