North Battleford, Sask. —  Casey Scheidegger’s rink has qualified for the quarterfinals at the 2019 Meridian Canadian Open after a 6-4 seven end win over Winnipeg’s Tracey Fleury.

The 2017 champion found herself in action Friday night after dropping a bout to the lone American rink at the championship.

She held a one-point lead heading into the eighth end during the 11:30 a.m. draw but Nina Roth scored two in the final end to secure the win.

It put the Lethbridge-based rink in a need-to-win situation, the same place they found themselves the last time they were here.

“We are just trying to play consistent and we are really excited to be able to qualify,” she said, adding it was a major goal of their’s coming in. “We have our provincials in a couple weeks so the extra games are definitely a benefit.”

Scheidegger said the team made a few errors in their matchup against Roth but learned from them.

“We are just trying to play consistent,” she said. “That is something we haven’t reached yet this year, just being consistent and being able to compete with the best teams.”

The rink plays Ottawa’s Rachel Homan at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
