Lethbridge Hurricanes win two straight weekend games

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a successful weekend for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The club hosted the Winnipeg ICE on Friday, January 27, 2023, earning a 2-1 victory. Sunday, January 29 had the team on the road at Rogers Place in Edmonton, where they defeated the Oil Kings 10-2.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 27

In front of over 3,600 fans, the Hurricanes welcomed the Winnipeg ICE to the ENMAX Centre on Friday, January 27.

Hayden Smith scored his sixth goal of the season at the 19:05 mark of the first period, off an assist from Chase Pauls and Joe Arntsen.

Smith’s goal was the only scored for the majority of the game until the third period. Connor McClennon scored his 23rd of the season to tie the game 33 seconds into the final frame.

At the 10:44 mark, Blake Swetlikoff scored his eight goal of the season. His goal ended up being the game winner, and the Hurricanes came away with the 2-1 win.

Hurricanes goaltender Bryan Thomson was named the first star of the game. He stopped 28 shots on 29 attempts. Mason Beaupit, the netminder for the ICE, was named the second star. He saved 26 shots on 28 attempts. Lethbridge’s Hayden Smith earned third star of the game honours.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 29

The Edmonton Oil Kings were taken for a wild ride by the visiting Lethbridge team. The Hurricanes scored 10 goals en route to a 10-2 victory.

Just over two minutes into the game, Anton Astaschevich scored his fifth of the season. This was followed by Hayden Smith’s second goal of the Hurricanes’ weekend set about 30 seconds later.

At the 4:35 mark, Jett Jones scored his 17th of the season to put Lethbridge up 3-0.

Just under three minutes into the second period, Tyson Zimmer scored his 12th of the season. His goal was followed by a successful shot by Miguel Marques, his sixth of the campaign.

Lethbridge scored two more goals in the second period. Cole Shepard recorded his 17th of the season at the 7:11 mark. This was followed by Hayden Smith’s second goal of the game at the 16:42 point.

In the third and final period of the game, Tyson Zimmer scored his second of the game at the 5:28 mark. Hayden Smith then completed his hat-trick with a goal at 8:16. This put the Hurricanes up 9-0.

At the 11:33 mark, Nolan Bentham scored his fifth of the season.

Mason Finley scored for the host Oil Kings at 12:53. Former Hurricane Noah Boyko scored at the 16:32 mark. The two Edmonton players’ goals were not enough to secure a comeback, and Lethbridge left the capital city with a 10-2 win.

Hayden Smith earned first star of the game honours, with his teammates Anton Astaschevich and Tyson Zimmer earned second and third star honours, respectively.

UP NEXT

The Hurricanes are back on home ice Wednesday, February 1. They will host the Moose Jaw Warriors at the ENMAX Centre. Lethbridge currently sits in fifth place in the Western Hockey League standings, with a record of 26-16-3-2.
