Investigation continues into fire at historic Lethbridge building

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Emergency responders are still investigating a fire that damaged a historic building in downtown Lethbridge.

On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, a fire broke out at the Bow On Tong building at 316 2 Avenue South. No injuries were reported, but the blaze scarred the building.

The City of Lethbridge said the investigation is a delicate process “due to the structural instability of [the] building as well as its status with Provincial and Municipal designation with the Alberta Register of Historic Places.”

The building was first built in 1919 and has been vacant since being sold in 2021.

The City of Lethbridge said it is working with the provincial government, representatives from Alberta Culture – Historic Resources, and members of the Lethbridge Historical Society, regarding the next steps to preserve any remaining historical elements.

The portion of 2 Avenue South between 3 Street and 4 Street remains closed due to the heavy equipment that is being used. Residents are asked to avoid the area while the investigation and clean-up work is underway.
