College and university sports recap: February 7, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a busy weekend for student-athletes with both the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and the University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The regular season is nearing its end for both the Kodiaks women’s and men’s volleyball teams.

On Friday, February 3, 2023, the women’s volleyball team defeated Medicine Hat College 3-0. Lethbridge College followed that with a 3-2 victory on Saturday, February 4. The Kodiaks’ last game of the regular season is Friday, February 10. The team will visit the University of Alberta-Augustana in Camrose. The Kodiaks are in third place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division with 10 wins and eight losses on the regular season.

Meanwhile, the men’s volleyball team defeated Medicine Hat College 3-1 on Friday, February 3. The Kodiaks picked up another 3-1 win against the Rattlers on Saturday, February 4. The team wraps up the regular season on Friday, February 10 in Camrose against the University of Alberta-Augustana. Currently, the Kodiaks are in second place in the ACAC South Division, with 14 wins and four losses this season.

The Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball teams both faced Medicine Hat College this weekend.

On Friday, February 3, the men’s basketball team beat the Rattlers 97-58. Filip Karanovic led the Kodiaks with 15 points, while Cooper Ward was the leading scorer for Medicine Hat College, with 30 points. On Saturday, February 4, the Kodiaks were once again victorious, earning the 93-47 victory. Brady Baines scored 15 points to lead Lethbridge College, while Cooper Ward led the Rattlers with 18 points. The Kodiaks host the University of Alberta-Augustana on Friday, February 10. Lethbridge College has 15 wins and three losses on the regular season, placing them atop the ACAC South Division.

The Kodiaks women’s basketball team beat the Rattlers 96-45 on Friday, February 3. Tylee Leavitt scored 18 points to lead Lethbridge College. Mina Djordjevic scored nine to lead Medicine Hat College. On Saturday, February 4, the Kodiaks defeated the Rattlers 74-40, with Kitawna Sparks leading Lethbridge College in scoring. She recorded 19 points, while Brynn Bremner scored nine to lead the Rattlers in points. The Kodiaks will host the University of Alberta-Augustana on Friday, February 10. With 12 wins and six losses, Lethbridge College is in third place in the ACAC South Division.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

Both the U of L Pronghorns men’s and women’s basketball teams hit the court this weekend.

The men’s basketball team hosted MacEwan University on Friday, February 3 and came away with the 89-76 victory. Angelo Mbituyimana led the U of L with 30 points. His teammate Tag Layton had an impressive performance as well, scoring 28 points. Job Janda scored 21 to lead the MacEwan University Griffins. In a rematch on Saturday, February 4, the Pronghorns earned another win, defeated the Griffins 88-64. Jeff Rodehutskors led the U of L in scoring with 22 points, while Job Janda again led the Griffins with 16 points. The Pronghorns’ men’s basketball team visits the University of Alberta in Edmonton to close out the regular season on Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11. The U of L is in 13th place in the Canada West standings, with six wins and 12 losses.

The Pronghorns women’s basketball team also hosted MacEwan University over the weekend. On Friday, February 3, the U of L defeated the Griffins 92-84. Jessica Haenni scored 34 points to lead the Pronghorns, while Mackenzie Farmer led MacEwan University with 28 points. On Saturday, February 4, the U of L earned another win, defeating the Griffins 81-67. Haily Weaver score 27 to lead the Pronghorns, and Mackenzie Farmer once again led the Griffins with 25 points. The U of L women’s basketball team closes out the regular season with a pair of games in Edmonton against the University of Alberta Pandas on Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11. The Pronghorns are in 13th place in the Canada West standings, with seven wins and 11 losses.

U of L swimmers hosted the Pronghorn Classic on Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4. Casara Holm, a third-year student-athlete, qualified for Nationals in the 50-metre Butterfly event, while first-year swimmers Makena Wood and Fergus Park both qualified in the 50-metre Breaststroke competition. In total, 14 members of the Pronghorn Athletics swim team will be going to the U SPORTS Swimming Championship. That’s the largest team to qualify for Nationals in the U of L’s history. The U SPORTS Swimming Championship is Thursday, February 23 to Saturday, February 25 in Victoria, British Columbia.

The U of L track and field team competed at the Jim Daly Bison Classic, hosted by the University of Manitoba. The Pronghorns achieved first place, third, fourth, sixth and seventh in the women’s weight throw event. Jinaye Shomachuk led the way and is currently first in the Canada West standings, and second in all of Canada. Andreas Troschke finished first in the men’s weight throw. Troschke is currently ranked first in both Canada West and U SPORTS. Lauryn Morris won gold in the women’s shot put event, while her teammate Jinaye Shomachuk placed second. Lauchlan Irish finished second in the triple jump with a personal best jump of 15.05 metres. That places him in second in Canada West and fourth in the national rankings. The track and field team is in Edmonton for the University of Alberta Pandas Open on Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11.
