LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Buffalo Sabres announced that a former member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes is staying with its National Hockey League (NHL) club.

Dylan Cozens has signed a seven-year contract extension with the Sabres, valued at $49.7 million U.S., with an average annual salary of $7.1 million.

Cozens was picked seventh overall by the team in 2019 and he is currently in his third season in the NHL.

So far this season, the forward has amassed 17 goals and 43 points in 49 games.

Sabres Coach Don Granato says Cozens loves the high level of competition in the pro league.

“I keep saying the same thing about him, it’s compete,” Granato said in December. “Just couple that with [the] love of the game that he has, the love of the game [of] hockey. He competes for the right reason — being in a team sport. He brings guys in with him, he drags people into the fight, per se, which is a real indicator of his leadership and leadership ability going forward.”

Cozens, who celebrates his 22nd birthday this week, played four seasons with the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Western Hockey League (WHL) between 2016-2019.

He served as the captain of the ‘Canes in his final year in the WHL. He was also an alternate captain for Team Canada at the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championship and came out of the tournament with a gold medal.
