City council approves plaque to commemorate ‘The Playgoers of Lethbridge’ centennial
LETHBRIDGE, AB – ‘The Playgoers of Lethbridge’ theatre group is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. To commemorate the occasion, Lethbridge City Council approved the budget for a plaque during its council meeting on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.
The ‘Playgoers of Lethbridge’ was founded by E.G. Sterndale Bennett, a longtime actor and theatre director who worked at amateur theatres throughout Canada. The group held its first meeting on January 20, 1923, making it one of the oldest amateur theatre troupes in the country.
With the monument application being approved, the plaque will cost just over $2,300, which is covered through a federal grant the group was approved for.
The club’s centennial plaque will be unveiled on the exterior of the Sterndale Bennett Theatre at the Yates Memorial Centre on Friday, April 21, 2023, followed by a dinner gala in June.
