RCMP searching for suspect in fatal collision near Fort Macleod

FORT MACLEOD, AB – Police are searching for a man from southern Alberta who has been charged in connection to a fatal collision near Fort Macleod last fall.

Fort Macleod RCMP was called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highways 2 and 3 just west of the community at approximately 8:58 p.m. on October 21, 2022.

According to RCMP, the preliminary investigation shows that a Dodge Caravan was travelling eastbound on Highway 3 when it collided with a semi-truck and trailer that was heading southbound on Highway 2.

Police say one of the young passengers in the van, a five-year-old child, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Caravan, along with two other young children, sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital.

A media release from RCMP states that Ryan Scott Potts, 38, of Brocket, faces the following charges:

  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death
  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited
  • Criminal negligence causing death
  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm
  • Driving an uninsured motor vehicle

The RCMP says there are numerous outstanding warrants for Potts’ arrest and his whereabouts are unknown at this time.
