LETHBRIDGE, AB – Following nearly 10 years at the helm of Lethbridge School Division 51, Superintendent Cheryl Gilmore has announced she will retire in July 2023.

Gilmore received her Bachelor of Education at the University of Lethbridge (U of L) in 1985, followed by her Masters of Education at the U of L and Doctorate of Education at the University of Montana.

After 18 years of teaching, she became an administrative associate at W.R. Myers High School in Taber. From there, she took the position as deputy superintendent for the Horizon School Division from 2000 to 2006, followed by seven years as the superintendent and executive officer of the Horizon School Division.

In August 2013, she was named the superintendent of the Lethbridge School Division, where she spent the last 10 years of her career.

A news release from the school division stated that Gilmore is highly respected among her peers and is a mentor to others across the province.

Lethbridge School Division Board Chair Allison Purcell said, “We wish Cheryl all the best in her future endeavours, and know that she will love having more time to spend with husband Don and the girls.”

Gilmore reflected on her time at the Lethbridge School Division and said she had many people to thank along the way.

“The relationships and friendships developed over the years will continue, and for that, I cannot be more thankful,” Gilmore said. “Lethbridge School Division is an amazing place, teeming with staff who are unwavering in their commitment and support for students and each other. I could not have finished my career in a better place. My time in this Division has been an honour.”
