College and university sports preview: February 17, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks are in action this weekend.

The Kodiaks women’s volleyball team in particular, has a high-stakes game coming up.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

It’s a big night for the Kodiaks women’s volleyball team. The team hosts the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday, February 17, 2023. The 6:00 p.m. match-up is a play-in game to secure a spot in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) playoffs. The Kodiaks finished the regular season with 10 wins and nine losses, which put them in third place in the ACAC South Division. The Rattlers, meanwhile, finished in sixth place with five wins and 14 losses. The winner of Friday’s game will advance to the ACAC women’s volleyball championships, taking place Thursday, February 23 to Saturday, February 25 and hosted by Red Deer Polytechnic.

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team clinched second place in the ACAC South Division last weekend, which earned the team an automatic bye to the championships. The team finished the regular season with 15 wins and four losses. The men’s volleyball championship tournament starts on Thursday, February 23 in Fort McMurray.

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams close out their regular seasons this weekend.

The women’s basketball team visits Keyano College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17 before visiting Lakeland College for another 6:00 p.m. game on Saturday, February 18. The Kodiaks have 13 wins and six losses this season, putting them in third place in the ACAC South Division. The Kodiaks women’s basketball team will host the ACAC championships beginning Thursday, March 2.

The men’s basketball team visits Keyano College for an 8:00 p.m. match-up on Friday, February 17. At 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, the Kodiaks visit Lakeland College to finish their regular season. The Kodiaks are in first place in the ACAC South Division with 16 wins and three losses. The Kodiaks will compete in the ACAC men’s basketball championships in Calgary starting Thursday, March 2.

The Kodiaks indoor track team is in Red Deer on Saturday, February 18, competing at the Running Room Grand Prix #2 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Looking ahead to next week, the Kodiaks men’s and women’s futsal teams start their regular seasons. At 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, the women’s futsal team will host Medicine Hat College. The men’s futsal team hosts Medicine Hat College at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, February 14, the Kodiaks esports team competed against Ball State in Valorant. A stream of the match-up can be seen at the Kodiaks twitch page.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L Pronghorns have the weekend off, but athletes continue to train for upcoming competitions.

The Pronghorn Athletics swim team will take part in the U SPORTS swimming championships in Victoria, British Columbia. The championship event is Friday, February 24 to Sunday, February 26.

The U of L track and field team will be in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for the Canada West Championships Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25. The track and field U SPORTS championships take place in Saskatoon from Thursday, March 9 to Saturday, March 11.
