Local wrestlers win gold at rural provincial championships

GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB – A group of local wrestlers represented Lethbridge at a recent event.

11 members of the Lethbridge Amateur Wrestling Association (LAWA), representing Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI), Chinook High School, and Immanuel Christian Secondary School competed at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) Rural Provincial Championships on February 24 and February 25, 2023.

The results for local athletes were as follows:

  • Tamyrn Bly (47 kg) – Gold (rep. Lethbridge Collegiate Institute)
  • Reese Ferguson (57 kg) – Gold (Chinook High School)
  • Payton Shields (61 kg) – Gold (LCI)
  • Solomon Prenevost (68 kg) – Gold (LCI)
  • Ryder Lowry (90 kg) – Gold (LCI)
  • Tyler Saruwatari (98 kg) – Gold (LCI)
  • Nolan Gobeil (120 kg+) – Gold (LCI)
  • Thomas Ellis-Toddington (65 kg) – Silver (LCI)
  • Danya Braun (65 kg) – Bronze (Immanuel Christian Secondary School)
  • Christien Lowry (68 kg) – 4th (LCI)
  • Chaeho (Joe) Shin (72 kg) – 6th (Chinook High School)

Ten athletes from Lethbridge have qualified for the ASAA Provincials, which will be held at LCI on March 17 and 18, 2023. There will be approximately 400 athletes from across Alberta competing at the event.
